Death of an American school's student (Nour Al Samman) in horrible accident.

One month prior to the accident we received a letter from the Damascus Community School (DCS), asking our permission to send our daughter Nour on a trip to Palmyra for the sixth grade children, and we did not give them our approval

Ten days later we received a phone call from the secretary of Mr. Michael Kent the director of the school informing us that Mr. Kent would like to see us in his office.
In the meeting there were Mr. Michael Kent, the director of the school, the two supervisors Mr. Eric Lyman and Mrs. Katie Boe, Mr. Scott Creeger, my wife and myself. The meeting was regarding the trip, they asked us why we didn't agree to send our daughter to the trip.
We explained to them that we never let our daughter sleep outside her home and we reminded them that one month ago, the school had arranged an overnight stay for the children on the field of the school we didn't agree about that and we brought her back home at midnight, so how can we leave her to sleep for two nights, hundreds of miles away from us?  Plus, we don't know anything about the arrangements and organizations about this trip. They didn't inform us that they'll be taking the kids in pick-up trucks.
They assured us that they will be taking all the precautions to keep the children safe and also strictly assured us that  no harm will happen to any of them as they will be accompanied by the two supervisors at all times.
I asked the director about the name of the hotel they have booked for the children and he said that they will be sleeping out in a tent in a specially chosen place in the desert and the two supervisors will sleep with them and also the girls will be separated from the boys. He assured us that the quality and safety will be better than any hotel. They were fully confident that everything would be fine.
After a very long discussion, we reluctantly agreed to send our daughter to the trip but my wife wanted to go with her. However, Ms. Katie Boe said last year a mother of one girl attended the trip and after she arrived to Palmyra, she found everything was well organized so she returned back to Damascus, and as my wife has three other children to look after at home she agreed not to go.

On Wednesday May the 17th at 8:30 pm, my daughter called me with her cell-phone and she was crying and complaining because the supervisors had left her with a few other children alone and they lost their way for few hours in the desert on some camels until some Bedouin helped them out.
I asked her where is she now? She said that she is in the tent.
I asked her if she wants me to come to pick her up back home.  She said it is not necessary as they are safe now.
She said that she is not allowed to talk more than five minutes and she has to switch off the mobile phone immediately.

Next day on Thursday 17th of May around 1:00 pm we received a phone call from the school asking me and my wife to attend there urgently. We were there in no time and waited around 20 minutes until Mr. Kent let us into his office.
We were so worried and asked him the reason for making us come so quickly, he told us that Nour has had an accident as she fell down from a pick-up truck.
I said, “Have you put the children in a pick-up truck!?”
He replied, “She died.” without taking the effort to break the bad news to us.
When I heard that, I immediately collapsed on the floor and instead of making sure that I am safe and have not gotten a heart attack, Mrs. Yazigi signaled with her head to the security guards to push us out of the school and it seems that Mr. Kent cruelly approved that.

For your information, my brother's son is in the 7th grade in the same school, and they could have called my brother before he told us, and let him pass the bad news to us in a way that has a little humanity.

Putting children in a pick-up truck which is not suitable for animals!
They cheaply used a pick up trucks instead of bringing some taxi cars or even mini buses.
The children were crowded in two pick-up trucks, and my daughter was in the second one, and there wasn't any supervisor or any other adult to protect them from the uneven roads of the desert. Instead, the supervisors were sitting in the first pick up beside the driver and of course they fastened there seat belts to make sure they are safe and they didn't care about the children! For your information, the police in the USA fine you if you don't fasten your seatbelt, and we thought they would do the same thing in this "American" school, but no, they put them in a truck that isn't even suitable for animals!
To complete the mess, they didn’t bother to check that the pick up driver they choose was a qualified driver.  We found out that he doesn't hold a driving license.

Due to this lack of basic concepts of children's safety, my daughter had dropped out of the pick up truck which caused a significant fracture in the base of the skull and caused immediate death.

This trip was badly arranged from the very beginning and until the tragedy of my daughter's death took place.

I am holding the Damascus Community School fully responsible for the death of my daughter and I am requesting immediate suspension of the director of DCS who is holding an American diplomat passport (Mr. Michael Kent) and all the supervisors involved in the Palmyra trip.

I also request the immediate closure of Damascus Community School as the safety of children re-investigated.
